The Clinical Psychology Observership at the Ranchi Institute of Neuro-Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS), attended by 13 students and 2 faculty members, was a transformative journey that bridged theoretical knowledge with practical insights into mental health care. Over three days, participants were immersed in diverse patient interactions, therapeutic practices, and multidisciplinary collaborations.

The first day included an orientation and visits to various wards, including those for substance abuse, psychosis, and forensic cases, as well as therapeutic units like yoga and physiotherapy. Highlights included observing psychological testing, in-patient therapy routines, and the holistic approach to patient care that emphasized human connection and reinforcement. On the second day, participants observed the patient admission process, emphasizing the importance of ruling out physical conditions before psychiatric diagnoses. Insights into substance abuse, its societal misconceptions, and the power of occupational therapy were particularly impactful. The third day focused on advanced psychological testing, a visit to the female ward, and outpatient department observations. Emotional resilience, family psychoeducation, and motivational insights from Dr. Amool Ranjan Singh deepened participants’ understanding of mental health care complexities.

Key learnings included the integration of therapy, assessment, and rehabilitation, the critical role of multidisciplinary teams, and the profound impact of human connection in therapy. The experience underscored the importance of resilience, compassion, and advocacy in mental health practice. This internship left participants with a renewed sense of purpose and empathy, reinforcing the significance of their roles as future mental health professionals.
